Today (24th October), the United Nations celebrates its platinum anniversary. It marks 70 years of inter-governmental level action for peace, prosperity and sustainable development of all humanity.
This is indeed a special year for the 193 nations that are members of the world’s foremost inter-governmental organization. For Sri Lanka, 2015 also marks 60 years of being a United Nations Member State.
Sri Lankan professionals have played a key role in the multi-faceted activities of the United Nations from even before the country became a member state (as mentioned by Subinay Nandy, the UN Resident Coordinator and the UNDP Resident Representative in Sri Lanka, in this article).
In honour of this day, we at Kiyanna salute the eminent Sri Lankan women who have played leadership roles at the United Nations.
